Sport Fight: Devastation 10-11-03 Oregon City OR
Reported By: Boxing Insider - 10.15.2003 12:25 PM
After the highly successful Sport Fight in Gresham just six weeks ago, Team Quest (with sponsors Rodder’s Pub & Grub, Full Sail Ale, Weston Pontiac-Buick-GMC, Coors, and Sunbelt Rentals and Scorpion Energy Drink) put on another excellent amateur show featuring many young Team Quest fighters. The small venue held all of the nearly 500 attendees comfortably. The close-in setup made every seat a great one. In attendance were Team Quest’s own Evan Tanner and Chael Sonnen, while UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture doubled as a commentator (for BadBreed.tv coverage) and occasional corner to his Team Quest stable mates. Matt Lindland was ensuring the event went off without a hitch. On hand to judge the night’s bouts were Mike Huff (of TKO Martial Arts), Lloyd Martindale (Clackamas Comm. College wrestling coach) and Scott McQuarry (of Oregon JJ in Tigard, OR). The night began with introductions and a heart-warming rendition of the national anthem, followed by the fire dancers (2nd Element of Zen) that are now synonymous with Sport Fight events.
Results:
Bout 1 – LW – Dave Cochran defeated Ryan Barrett by KO (punch) at 1:50 of Rd1. Cochran and Barrett both started hot out of the gates. The fight quickly went to the ground where Cochran was unable to secure a rear choke after taking Barrett’s back. The two regained their feet and Cochran caught his opponent with an overhand right dropping him cold to the canvas.
Bout 2 – MW – Ryan ‘The Hitman’ Hart defeated Leonard Glover by TKO (strikes) at 2:00 of RD3. This was a great back-and-forth fight with both guys getting their turn at a dominant position. More than once Glover had chokes in deep but was unable to keep a good hold on Hart. Both took and doled out their respective lumps until Hart mounted Glover and began a tireless assault from which Glover could only cover up and play defense. Sensing no change in tide…the referee ended the bout with a minute to go.
Bout 3 – WW – John Gunderson defeated Pedro Castaneda by tapout (triangle) at 1:10 of Rd1. Castaneda secured the takedown prompting Gunderson to work from the guard. He had the triangle on Pedro for at least 45 seconds before he was able to sink it in deep enough to get the tapout.
Bout 4 – LW – Jose Orozco defeated Dave Banuett by TKO (strikes) at 1:20 of Rd 3. Coming off an impressive 1st round KO of his last opponent at Sport Fight’s previous show, Banuett was looking to add to his win column. It was not to be, however, as Orozco met every challenge head on. Banuett took two clean left hooks to start the bout that immediately opened a cut above his right eye. He was not deterred though as he brought the fight right back to his opponent. Banuett was actually saved by the bell ending the second round. Orozco had him mounted and defenseless, but could not close the deal before time expired. He picked up right where he left off, and nailed Banuett with strikes prompting a stoppage less than halfway through the final round.
Bout 5 – LHW – J.D. Stanley defeated Chris Keeney by tapout (rear naked choke) at 2:35 of Rd1. Stanley repeatedly showed his grappling dominance keeping his opponent underneath him until he could get better position. He didn’t have to wait long as Keeney turned away from strikes and gave up his back. It took Stanley no more than 30 seconds to sink in the choke deep enough to get the tapout.
Bout 6 – LHW – Jared Freeman defeated Kevin Schey by TKO (strikes) at 1:37 Rd1. Freeman again showed his abilities as a G&P dominator. Having taken a fight in Gresham on 45 minutes notice and winning a decision, he followed it with the quick dismantling of Kevin Schey. Noticably trimmed down since the Gresham fight, Freeman had his way with Schey for the duration of the bout. All 97 seconds were Freeman’s as he secured the takedown, got the mount, and beat the tar out of his opponent until he tapped out (the international signal for ‘UNCLE’).
Bout 7 – HW – Brent Miller defeated a fighter known only as “Carnage” by tapout (rear naked choke) at 2:20 of Rd1. “Carnage” started the offensive (in more way than one) attack with a double drop kick that glanced off Miller and left “Carnage” in a heap in the middle of the ring. This bout looked like two grizzlies trying to mambo. It definitely wasn’t pretty, but they were throwing hard at each other. Miller used (an apparent) wrestling background to throw “Carnage” to the mat. Miller sank the choke fairly deep but didn’t get the tapout until he set the hooks and put some muscle into it.
Main Event
HW – Brandon M. (pronounced Mee-hal-chitch…spelling uncertain…apologies to his family) defeated Trent ‘Sandman” Standing by tapout (strikes) at 2:50 of Rd2. Larry Vandervort, (who did not show after being touted as the main event in all advertising) was replaced at the last minute by Trent ‘Sandman’ Standing. These two big boys went at it hard and heavy, each taking their turn getting the best of exchanges. There was a bit of confusion in the second round when Standing was penalized a point for an illegal knee to the head of a downed opponent (Brandon was still on all fours as he rose from the canvas). Standing gave an indication that he was done when it was announced he’d been penalized a point. The bout continued, but Standing fell victim to the onslaught of the larger Brandon M. tapping to strikes 10 seconds before the end of round 2.
