Hughes Submits Trigg to Retain UFC Welterweight Title at UFC 45: Revolution at Mohegan Sun Arena-Gracie, Shamrock Inducted As Charter Members In New UFC Hall of Fame; Top 10 Favorite Fighters Receive Viewer's Choice Awards
November 22, 2003
UNCASVILLE, Conn., Nov 22, 2003 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ultimate Fighting Championship Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes retained his title here tonight with a tap out victory over highly-regarded Frank Trigg in the main event of UFC 45: Revolution at the Mohegan Sun Arena as the UFC marked its 10th anniversary. Hughes got position on Trigg, mounted his back and his fifth title defense in two years was fait accompli at the 3:54 mark of the first round.
"He surprised me with that quick takedown at the start because I thought he would stand up longer. But, I never thought I would win the fight like that," Hughes said.
Trigg (9-2-0) from El Segundo, Calif., did get the upper hand at the outset, but Hughes (30-3-0) from Hillsboro, Ill., reversed his advantage.
"He got position and I just got choked out,"Trigg said. "There is not much else to say."
In special ceremonies to mark the 10th anniversary, legendary fighters Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock were inducted as the charter members of the new UFC Hall of Fame during the international pay-per-view telecast. Both Gracie and Shamrock fought in UFC 1: The Beginning, November 12, 1993, in Denver, Colo., and have made numerous contributions to the growth of the UFC and mixed martial arts in the United States.
Gracie, a member of the legendary martial arts family from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the UFC's first champion, thanked his family, especially his father, Helio, and the UFC for the Hall of Fame honor.
Shamrock, the first UFC super fight champion, singled out the new UFC owners, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, president Dana White and the entire UFC staff for making it possible for MMA fighters to continue to be successful in the sport.
"But, I especially want to thank the fans, who never gave up and continued to support the sport during the time when it almost disappeared from public view," he said.
It was those fans who selected the top 10 most popular UFC fighters in its history and those legends were also introduced during the evening. New Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture was voted the most popular fighter. The others, who received Viewer's Choice Awards included: Oleg Taktarov, Pat Miletich, Marco Ruas, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman, Don Frye, Tank Abbott, Gracie and Shamrock.
In the night's feature heavyweight match, Abbott (8-10-0) from Huntington Beach, Calif., was defeated by Cabbage Correira (20-4-0) of Hilo, Hawaii, when the referee stopped the fight at the 2:14 mark of the first round due to a cut on Tank's head.
In other action:
Middleweight top contender Matt Lindland (9-2-0) of Eagle Creek, Ore., won his re-match with Falaniko Vitale (15-3-0) of Honolulu, Hawaii, by tap out from punches at 4:23 of the third round. Lindland got Vitale in full mount and he couldn't escape his ground and pound offense. Lindland lost to Vitale at UFC 43: Meltdown June 6 in Las Vegas when he knocked himself out while attempting a takedown.
Middleweight contender Phil Baroni (6-3-0) of Las Vegas, Nev., lost a controversial decision to Evan Tanner (9-2-0) of Portland, Ore., when referee Larry Landless stopped the fight due to punches at the 4:42 mark of the first round. Baroni started fast and opened a cut over Tanner's left eye in the second minute. But, Tanner came back with punches, a body slam and his patented ground and pound offense to get the advantage. Tanner was raining punches on Baroni when Landless stepped in and stopped it.
Welterweights Robbie Lawler (8-1-0) from Davenport, Iowa, and Chris Lytle (26-10-4) from Indianapolis, Ind., went to war for three rounds before Lawler won a unanimous decision. Lawler went right to work in the first round with a powerful body slam and his patented powerful punches, but Lytle recovered to end the round with a flurry. Lawler finally knocked Lytle down halfway through round three to seal the victory and rebound from a hip flexor injury that sidelined him for seven months.
In the night's first heavyweight bout, Pedro Rizzo (14-5-0) from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, won a unanimous decision over Ricco Rodriguez (10-4-0) of Las Vegas, Nev. Rodriguez never mounted an offense and missed takedown attempts in all I three rounds. Rizzo scored just enough with his powerful kickboxing game to win all three rounds.
Middleweight local favorite Keith Rockel (23-1-0) from Lancaster, Mass., made quick work of Chris Ligouri (2-2-0) from Middletown, N.J. He submitted Ligouri with a guillotine choke at the 3:29 mark of the first round after dominating the fight from the outset.
In the curtain raiser, veteran lightweight Yves Edwards (13-6-1) from The Woodlands, Tex., won a second-round TKO over UFC newcomer Nick Agallar (15-3-0) of Kenosha, Wis. After an uneventful first round, Edwards went to work and hit Agallar with a left hook and a right leg kick to put him on his back. He quickly pounced and ended it with a flurry of punches at the 2:14 mark.
