UFC 46: Super Unnatural

A night of upsets, shocks, and flukes

What started off as a great show, eventually deteriorated into something very unnatural. Vitor Belfort won the LHW championship by doctor’s stoppage after Randy Couture suffered a torn bottom eyelid. In the other championship match, B.J. Penn submitted the seemingly invincible, Matt Hughes without much resistance. Overall, the card had some great fights, but the injury to Couture and the lackluster performance of Matt Hughes, cast a shadow over the entire event.

To add to the aberrant proceedings, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell squared-off in the middle of the ring to promote their upcoming fight at UFC 47. Spewing the same old tired smack talk, Ortiz called Liddell, “A snowman,” while Liddell promised a knockout if Ortiz stood toe-to-toe. Honestly, this fight is about a year too late, and the face-off did little to remove that stigma.

The Light heavyweight Championship

In what might go down as the strangest finish ever, Vitor Belfort won the light heavyweight championship after Couture suffered a serious injury from an apparent finger (glove) to the eye just seconds into the first round. Obviously disappointed by the outcome, the fans booed loudly when Belfort addressed the crowd in the post-fight interview. Due to the seriousness of the injury, Couture will have to undergo surgery immediately to repair his torn eyelid.

The Welterweight Championship

In what goes down as the BIGGEST upset in the history of the UFC, B.J. Penn defeated Matt Hughes by rear naked choke at 4:39 of the first round. Even more impressive is the fact that Penn moved up from 155 pounds to take this fight against the seemingly invincible Hughes.

After Hughes missed an early takedown, Penn dominated the fight from the top position scoring downward blows and deftly maneuvering for control. During a quick jockey for position, Penn secured Hughes’ back and took advantage of an opening when Hughes tried to grab a leg.

The Under card

In the heavyweight rematch, Frank Mir scored a decisive KO over Wes Sims. In the first round, Mir methodically controlled the action from the mount and cut Sims badly over the eye. After a slow start to the second round, Mir scored two knees from the clinch, followed by two huge punches that sent Sims sprawling to the ground.

Newcomer, Renato Verrisimo totally dominated former champion, Carlos Newton for three rounds with a solid takedown defense and excellent ground control to score a unanimous victory.

Newcomer, Lee Murray demonstrated his vast arsenal of skills by submitting Jorge Rivera in the first round via armbar/triangle choke. The real story occurred during the post-fight interview when Murray, recollecting his legendary street fight with Tito Ortiz, called the former champion out. With typical bravado, Tito responded by making a slicing action across a throat.

In the preliminary matches Matt Serra won a unanimous decision over Jeff Curran, Josh Thomson defeated Hermes Franca by unanimous decision, and George St Pierre outlasted Karo Parisyan for a victory by unanimous decision.
